4 Reasons Solicitors Should Consider Dublin!
Posted by Red Tree on 02/08/19 in Advice & Tips
Well the past 10 days have certainly been eventful in British and Irish politics with the appointment of Boris Johnson as the new Prime Minister and the subject of the Irish backstop being the focus of attention for the newly appointed British Government.
At time of writing, An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have just completed their first call where, by all accounts, there was no meeting of minds.
And so, the future of Brexit remains uncertain and with it the relationship between Ireland and the UK, in particular, Dublin and Belfast. One thing we can say for certain though is that, within the legal sector, Dublin is becoming an ever more attractive relocation destination for both companies and employees alike.
Today, we are focussed on solicitors and what Brexit means for them. The Law Society of Ireland has reported that “more than 1,200 UK lawyers have registered in Ireland since the Brexit vote”. This is a staggering increase when compared to previous years and is an indication that solicitors are taking a proactive approach to the challenges presented by the Brexit conundrum.
On the island of Ireland, we can see that there are significant benefits to be enjoyed for solicitors who decide to relocate from Belfast to Dublin.
For those of you reading this who are considering such a move, here are some key benefits we have identified which might help you with your decision.
(1) Better Pay
Updated salary reports for 2019 indicate that Dublin-based solicitors benefit from far healthier compensation than those employed in a comparable Belfast law firm. In fact, the differential is quite substantial:
(2) Flexible Working
The role of a solicitor could never be described as 9 – 5 which is one reason why many favour flexible working conditions in their contract. This is particularly valid for more experienced solicitors and many of the clients we work with are willing to facilitate such conditions.
This flexibility facilitates many different choices of work-life balance including the option to remain at your present address whilst commuting to Dublin for portions of the working week. Belfast to Dublin is a short commute by car and using the train provides a commuting option with incresased productivity.
(3) Career Progression
In addition to improved salaries, Dublin firms are offering significant career progression opportunities for their solicitors in comparison to those based in Belfast. As a key European financial and business centre, the Dublin business market acts as a catalyst for growth for both law firms and their employees. With the challenges presented by Brexit, Dublin is now seen as an attractive location for UK & International firms.
(4) Uncertainty in the Northern Irish Market
If there is one word that sums up Brexit it is uncertainty. This is particularly true in Northern Ireland and, even if a catastrophic ‘No-Deal’ is avoided. Dublin, on the other hand, will remain a key European business city and the only English-speaking capital in Europe. This key positioning will contribute to continued FDI from US and international based companies.
